5 Creative Ways to Add Privacy to Your Yard

Although you’re supposed to love thy neighbor, your home is your sanctuary and your privacy must be protected. There are many ways to add privacy to your yard which allows you to relax without worrying about nosey neighbors peering at you while simultaneously shielding unsightly objects from your view.

Whether you live in an urban area or rural community, everyone values their privacy the same and should be able to easily attain it. Luckily, there are easy and creative ways to build privacy walls to protect your space.

Hedges

These are probably one of the most popular ways to create privacy in your yard. Tall, dense hedges add both privacy and curb appeal which is a win-win for both you and your neighbors. There are many options for hedges that are evergreen so you can enjoy privacy year-round. A few of the most commonly used evergreen hedges are:

  • Thuja “Green Giant” Arborvitae
  • Leyland Cypress
  • Holly

Outdoor Curtains

Curtains are a great way to add privacy to your home both inside and out. If you have a patio or porch structure already, you can easily install curtain rods along the outer edge of the existing covering and then add your choice of outdoor curtains.

If you don’t have an existing structure, you can drive wooden posts into the ground around the area that you want to enclose, and then hang your curtain from a rope, wire, or poles in between each post.

Bonus: curtains are a great way to keep bugs out of your backyard space!

Lattice Fencing

All it takes to create lattice fencing is some wood and nails! It’s possibly the cheapest way to attain privacy in your yard and a super easy DIY project. All you have to do is figure out the length and width you’d like your lattice to be and decide on the color and placement!

Once you’ve got the lattice fence installed, you can create a living wall with climbing plants and vines.

Vertical Garden

Here’s a great two-in-one landscaping idea for your yard that’s especially useful if you have a small space. Install a simple wall with vertical slats that are a few inches apart from each other – just enough space to hang a window box planter.

Create your living wall by planting a vertical garden in as many window boxes as your wall can fit! You can easily DIY this project and build the wall to suit your specific needs.

Privacy Sails

Otherwise known as privacy screens, these are a new-age way to add privacy to your yard and protect yourself from the sun. Privacy sails are mounted to frames and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. You can even find ones that are made with SPF so your backyard is as safe as it is enjoyable!
